WEEK #11

For this final week I made more organic 3d objects to go with my experience. I chose to use the portrait format, that feels more like a mirror of ourselves.

Along the semester my project has changed in different ways. Originally my idea was to make a human kills a plant with his breath and the goal was that he/she had to discover he/she had to stop breathing to make the plant lives. And stop breathing could mean kill her/himself.
This experience could have make people realize that humans are vampires/parasites, they kill their surroundings in order to live.

But there were some inconsistencies, problems. First, in order to capture the breath data I use a CO2 sensor and everybody knows that plants use CO2 to grow. Also I had to make cool organic plant designs, because the rose wasn't original and personal enough. And I had to find a way of displaying properly the depth interaction to make users feel better the personification of themselves and thus strengthen their connection with this organic shape.

Thus I changed the original idea to a mirror of a human. The shapes I made act as a part of ourselves. This digital representation of a part of us is connected to our breath and movement.

At the beginning people don't really know how to interact with it but the mask force them to keep experiencing and at some point they relax and synchronize themselves with their new found part.

WEEK #10

This week I tried to follow the recommendation. I changed the rose to a more abstract shape and I added a clipping mask to the composition.
This clipping mask is moving along the Z axis discovering the 3d shape.

I connected this animation to my breathing mask thus it moves according to the breath.

But with this I loose my depht interaction.

In a second time, my goal was to create the  same effect directly in TD, that allows me to keep it 3d. I exported each object separately from C4D, then I tried to make the same texture in Touchdesigner. The only problem I couldn't solve was the glass material of the pipe.

Then I mapped the breath data on the camera field, this allows me to clip the rendered composition. Thus, when you breath it shows progressively the object. Also the object moves according to your head movement.

The resulting effect is not that bad. It acts as a "living artwork". This art work mirrors you. You make it live. You and the artwork are interconnected.

I'm a bit sad because I'm loosing my analogy to "humans destroy their environment" but on the other side it looks more aesthetic this way.

Next I want to try to make different composition and maybe see how it goes with animations.

WEEK #8

This week I finally connected all my tests together.

My Touch Designer program reacts to the gas sensor, the plant follow the breath and the Kinect track the head of the interactor in order to give him the illusion of depth.

The "player" feel sad when the flowers die and feel happy when the flower is alive. The player has to hold his breath to make the flower live.

I tried with a new plant made with Maya. I want to make more because for the moment it's the rose that satisfy me the most.

I also should work more on the animation and find a way to put 2 textures on one object. Though, I think the overall of my project is ready.

I would also like to connect this to Ableton, that's my mission for next week.

WEEK #7

This week I've connected the gaz sensor to Touchdesigner. My Animation is finally responding to respiration !

I want to set up a new animation, I want to change this Rose. As David recommended me I tried using the brush tool from Maya. Unfortunately I wasn't happy with the result. Next week, a beta version of my installation will be ready.
